2020 AIGA Seattle Changemaker Series

You Grow Girl!

Mental health is not a given—we must build systems that enable us to thrive.

Every year, over 40 volunteers of the Changemaker Series support the work of six nonprofit organizations in the greater Seattle area. This year, I was accepted into the series to partner with local Seattle-based nonprofit, You Grow Girl!, that works to create a safe space for all female-identifying youth of color to seek support and express themselves.

For four and a half months, my team collaborated with You Grow Girl! to research, develop, and implement a human-centered solution to better engage key stakeholders, improve donor reach and increase visibility of the organization.

Research

How might we create communication tools to better engage key stakeholders with all advocates and allies of the You Grow Girl! sisterhood so that they feel more connected to the mission of empowering girls and young women of color?

Team Rise began work with You Grow Girl! by getting to know members of the sisterhood as well as internal teams. Through discussions and team research, Team Rise was able to pinpoint a missing critical component at the root of any brand seeking sustainable success: a way to consistently communicate their mission and essence to all stakeholders so that they in turn can go out and be ambassadors to potential donors.

A Sisterhood Toolkit

What will this toolkit accomplish? How can we equip You Grow Girl! to compete for the funds? How can this toolkit help You Grow Girl! exude trust in the community?

Throughout our ideation stage, our team assessed what would be most useful for the Sisterhood Toolkit to contain. In continuing to asses the You Grow Girl! brand at large, we found that further developing the You Grow Girl! brand through brand guidelines, an updated logo, and tailored brand library, would help promote a consistent identity across all mediums.

“Radical Growth”

Phase three consisted of prototyping a Sisterhood Toolkit as well as developing and presenting three possible brand concepts for our client to serve as the reference point for their updated brand identity. Radical Growth was chosen and would inform branding for the sisterhood toolkit going forth.
